The presence of limestone in the municipalities in Brussels is a significant real fact. This presence strongly influences the waters in the municipalities. This has become a variable scourge from one municipality to another and including the use of certain methods such as water softening.
The effect of this scourge is not the same in all regions. Let us look at the case of the municipalities located in the province of Walloon Brabant.
Walloon Brabant is confronted with a strong presence of limestone in the water supplied to it. It is also one of the Walloon provinces where the water is the “hardest”. In other words, the water distributed is loaded with calcium and magnesium ions.
But all the municipalities of Walloon Brabant are not equal in the face of this "scourge" which eats away at pipes and household appliances. Note, however, that hard water is harmless to health, and is also considered beneficial! For this comparison, we will speak in terms of the amount of calcium carbonate, the major component of limestone, per thousand liters of water (or per cubic meter).
We thus find at the top of the ranking of the most calcareous municipalities two entities from the east of Walloon Brabant, Hélécine and Jodoigne, with respectively 440 and 437 grams maximum per thousand liters of water. However, this is much less than two years ago since the water in Hélécine contained 470 grams of limestone per cubic meter and Jodoigne had 529.
Be that as it may, As Marc Closset, director of water resources management at SWDE, explains to us, the areas from which water is taken for distribution in Walloon Brabant are all limestone.
However, techniques are developed to try for a time to overcome this scourge. One of these techniques and the most practiced by the way is the use of a softener .

There are several types of softeners . The best known and the most effective against limestone is the ion exchange resin softener: in contact with the resin, the calcium and magnesium ions are eliminated by retention and replaced by sodium ions (sodium is the main component of cooking salt).
Ultimately, the use of a softener can be effective against the scourge of hard water in the affected regions. If the water is hard, you will also use more shampoo, washing powder or detergents because these products will foam and clean less well. Highly calcareous water also attacks hair and skin and damages laundry (discoloration, roughness). Finally, tap water will probably taste worse, so will your coffee or tea.
